Why I Don't Think Neither Serges Nor Isoc Is Dr. Wily

There are theories that Dr. Wily is still around in the Megaman X series but I just stared to think, neither Isoc nor Serges is Dr. Wily. Certainly, Dr. Wily's influence has lived on in the Maverick Virus but most likely not him. But I had theories that could counter the idea that both Serges and Isoc are Dr. Wily. However, none of these are canon and just simply best said, headcanon.

Serges' role in Megaman X2

Serges appeared in Megaman X2 as a Reploid who looks like a robotic version of Dr. Wily. We can see that Serges was able to do a couple of stuff that only Dr. Wily could do. Dr. Wily is the creator of Zero and nobody else knows Zero from inside-out but Dr. Wily. Serges made Zero a NEW BODY and created the Z-Saber. Also, Serges chooses to fight Megaman X using a machine rather than through direct combat. Sounds familiar?

It's also interesting that there are some textual changes between the Japanese version and the American version of the game. It turns out that the Japanese text says, "Such regret to be defeated by a memento of Dr. Light!" Serges is mentioned to be a Reploid with Dr. Wily's memories. Having Dr. Wily's memories doesn't make Serges, Dr. Wily! However, it's possible that Dr. Wily's memories live on through the Maverick Virus. In short. Dr. Wily is no longer around, he's too dead and in Hell to do what he does. However, his legacy manages to live on in digitized format which probably was used to create Serges.

What should be noted is that Serges and his two bodyguards Violen and Agile seek to restore Sigma. Serges doesn't seem too interested in world domination. Dr. Wily wasn't all too keen to let anyone take over the world but himself. Why Serges would build Sigma a new body rather than seek to become the antagonist of the second game is a mystery.

What would be interesting is that Keiji Inafune even said the following:

“He might be... he might not be.” The creator thinks this is “one of those things that is best left without an official comment.”, believing in “planting seeds of imagination in players and letting them come to their own conclusions.”

Isoc's role in Megaman X6

If there was one character in Megaman X6 that was totally underdeveloped (even MORE than Serges) - it was Isoc! Isoc is never fought against or just ends up as a footnote. Yet, he was also voiced by the late Takeshi Aono (who died in 2012) who was also Dr. Wily's voice actor. Hideyuki Umezu (Zulten's voice in Turboranger) became Dr. Wily's new voice actor. Isoc was who was fascinated with Zero and would appear in certain cutscenes related to Zero.

Megaman X6 had certain scenes depending on how the game went. As a Zero fanboy, I did think about how Zero's cutscenes played it out. If you defeated Hi-Max in the teleportation rooms using Zero (a feat that's quite hard to do unless you defeated Rainy Turtloid) - you get a scene of Zero being praised by Isoc. Isoc does also get warned by Gate about obsessing with Zero. Eventually, if you DO defeat Gate with Zero (which makes it easier than using Megaman X) - you will get this interesting cutscene. A lifeless Isoc is there. Then Zero hears a voice that encourages Zero. The voice is "??" is implied to be Wily. It's not labeled as Isoc either for a reason.

Though, we may want to find the naming trend based on historical figures. For instance, Dr. Wily's first name is Albert and the design is based on Albert Einstein. Thomas Light is named after Thomas Edison. Isoc is obviously a play on Isaac Newton.

Possible conclusion

So. Dr. Wily is too dead to be around. Humans don't live that long. Ironically, these advanced robots are outliving humans in the Megaman series. Screw logic! It seems that Dr. Wily's memories are written all over the initial Maverick Virus which managed to also create the Sigma Virus in the process. It's also possible that Dr. Wily's memories managed to be the basis of creating both Serges and Isoc. Whoever created both of them probably found Dr. Wily's memories in data format from the last century and implanted them into both robots. So. both Serges and Isoc are NOT Wily but they have Wily's memories as a result of whatever weird science there is in the mainline Megaman universe.

  1. Interesting theory, I have a theory that Dr. Wily is actually death in Megaman X timeline, considering Dr. Light (his nemesis) has passed away due to aging. Dr. Wily do make an appearance in Megaman X as a cameo, but not truly explained, for example in Zero's dream and subconscious. In Megaman X5, Sigma says he meets a great doctor. This may indicates that Dr. Wily is still alive, right? I think no. The Dr. Wily that Sigma meets maybe a hologram, just like the Dr. Light capsule. So, it is possible for Sigma to find the Dr. Wily capsule and upgraded himself with Final W Model. That's just my theory. :D

    1. Or another, Sigma was speaking figuratively. For Zero's dream, Dr. Wily would have just programmed it into Zero to make sure Zero will continue his work.
