These Metal Hero Entries Are More Mature Than You Think

Maybe one reason why I tend to prefer mostly old school Tokusatsu from the 80s to 90s is most of them tend to have the more "mature" feel. Okay, it doesn't mean I'm not enjoying new school Kamen Rider (which I prefer over old school Kamen Rider) and Ucchuu Sentai Kyuranger. I'd like to talk about Metal Hero shows that didn't look too much like a kiddie show.

Tokkei Winspector

The very first of the Rescue Police Trilogy. The series itself has no real main villain. It's almost like a strange blend of American shows Automan and Knight Rider. Although the setting is pretty much science fiction but it has a LOT of lessons that seem to be more fit for grown ups than children. There's a lot of real gun action, some blood and criminal cases aside from the fantasy-based environment. Think of it as Tokusatsu version of Rescue 911.

Tokkyu Shirei Solbrain

Winspector ended after 51 episodes with the first villain they faced as the final villain. Now comes the successor Solbrain which features the new hero Daiki and his partner Reiko. Captain Masaki decided to create the Solbrain organization in hopes of rehabilitating criminals who haven't crossed the line. But there's one issue that Captain Masaki may have forgotten namely not all criminals can be rehabilitated. The series would later take a darker turn when Ryuichi Takaoka arrived as the recurring villain of the series mid-season where he would frequently harass the team.

Tokosou Exceedraft

I haven't seen much of this series and I only read some synopsis. Come on Sailor Otaku where's the Exceedraft subs? I've been stuck in limbo! From what I read the show started off with some regular crooks but ended up having more supernatural just like how Solbrain and Winspector did it. Later, they would introduce one fearsome villain named Iwao Daimon who's said to be the Devil himself. I've seen some of the finale raw and I think it's scarier than what GoGoFive and Lightspeed Rescue could offer their viewers. Now I just want to see this season subbed. =(

Tokosou Robo Janperson

While he has no human past (compared to Jiban who was a monster-slaying Robocop) but you can't deny that he's Robocop-inspired. The first time I saw this show, the first episode would give anyone the impression of the Otomo androids from the third movie. He arrives as this new guy in town to uphold public trust, to protect people and to uphold the law the same way Robocop does. The series features various criminal cases from three major criminal gangs in Japan and Janperson foils them the same way Robocop would. It also showed instances, where Janperson ended up sparing androids with human feelings, which is one himself. Personally, I think this Robocop-inspired show is miles better than Jiban IMO.
