Well, Disney screwed it again, right? I always thought about a couple of times I actually nitpicked Beauty and the Beast (2017) because I wanted Emma Roberts to be Belle. However, even if Roberts were Belle but a bad script and bad directing would still flop. They got Crystal Liu to finally become Mulan. Yes, this Mulan is hotter but is the script any good? I'm not really going to compare it to Mulan (2009) which was NOT for children. Instead, I'd like to really show Disney's indecisiveness regarding what it wanted to do with Mulan (2020). They were set for a "more realistic" story yet they added Wuxia magic and aimed for a PG-13 rating. A PG-13 movie is not necessarily a bad thing. The first Mortal Kombat movie by New Line Cinema won Midway (and later Netherrealm) was pretty good though I wanted it to have some of that gore from the game.
I just wonder did Disney EVER learn its lesson? Or better yet, did Modern Disney ever learn its lesson? There's so much wokeness here and there such as the sudden inclusion of sensitive themes just to avoid offending people. Beauty and the Beast (2017) really tried to turn Belle into a feminist. Not to mention Mulan here is a Mary Sue. I really think about the reviews done by Nostalgia Critic against newer Disney films or that of Angry Joe. Yes, Angry Joe (though he needs another person to play as his other character Corporate Commander) reveals that Mulan was weak character development. How can Mulan who starts as a Mary Sue then she becomes weak then becomes strong again? In fact, the Angry Joe review really nitpicks it rather well. It was also Angry Joe that made me not buy Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite and Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
I think the problem is that Disney is aiming to make a PG-13 version of the Mulan (2009) movie which was obviously not for children but for adults. They could have just decided to make a funny action-comedy PG-13 movie instead. Give Mulan her weaknesses from the original film and let her develop into a powerful warrior. Maybe, add some musical numbers because they help characterize Disney movies. Instead, trying to tone down the Mulan (2009) movie isn't a good choice. We also have Donnie Yen here who was also in the movie Huadu Chronicles which was a PG-13 movie. Maybe, they could've watched some PG-13 Chinese comedy movies as a template for Mulan (2020). They could've added a human Mushu (like in the 2009 movie) and not killed him. Bring back the trio of friends from the 1990s movie too. The movie's indecisiveness was just one that really gave a bad plot. They could do without musical numbers. Just make the movie light and try to do the action based on martial arts comedy movies. Don't assume people watched the original - treat it like an entirely new product!
Perhaps the worst part is that the actress Crystal had to make unnecessary side comments. Really Crystal? Siding with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is a way to lose favor with the Chinese people. A lot of the Chinese people living in China are FED UP with the CCP. The CCP hasn't been fair to its own people either. Freedom of religion and information is still very much needed in China. How can anyone want to support the CCP if you've been victimized by it way too many times? Disney sure chose the wrong side of the fence. They could've opted to support Taiwan and Hong Kong to get a score. But no, they had to side with the CCP. I guess all of that led to the worldwide boycott especially how brutal crackdowns have happened in Hong Kong. I love Hong Kong so much that I do have a good reason to boycott it too.
Pretty much, I guess it's safe to say bye, bye Disney and that the company itself ruins everything it touches. Marvel sucks now too and I blame Disney for it too. A lot of childhood was ruined. Disney really brought dishonor to us all with crystal-clear beautiful desperation.
