"You're Still Trying To Win" - Mortal Kombat II's REALLY PAINFUL AI

Mortal Kombat II tends to get praised as the best of the classic series. Its popularity actually ended up inspiring the creation of the spin-off adventure game Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks - a non-canon retelling of the events of the second game. Even more, MK Shaolin Monks has MKII has a bonus content that can be unlocked by fulfilling five Smoke missions. I decided to play it and really just found out (again) that MKII had the history of a really painful AI in one way or another. The difficulty seems to exponentially increase the higher you got on top of the ladder. Worse, Shang Tsung, Kintaro, and Shao Kahn were waiting for you with even higher difficulty!

So, what's with the Computer Is a Cheating Bastard trope? MKII had some charge characters where you held a certain button and released it. Some moves could be done by the opponent but not you. Sub-Zero can follow up a ground freeze with a freeze in the CPU but you can't do it. Scorpion could tag you along twice with his spear in the CPU but you can't do it. You may also consider how often you want to throw and the CPU THROWS YOU INSTEAD. The CPU is very good at button reading. Granted, the hidden content of Shaolin Monks is the arcade edition so just expect extremely high difficulty. The highest I got before was Shang Tsung and I ragequit over it.

The MKII arcade really is one game I remembered had too many rage quitters. How many of the players just ragequit because after the first opponent - it just gets harder? I didn't see so many people climb up all the way to Shao Kahn. That's why I hear having the home version was better. For the Super NES version, putting it on VERY EASY allowed easier victories accompanied with some cheats like Super Strength. Otherwise, the game is a pain to endure. The arcade was really just that crazy in how it nearly predicted your every move. You can imagine the pain that it caused to people playing the game.

For the bosses, it can get really worse. For one, I think allowing Shang Tsung to keep his overpowered morph move is a BIG MISTAKE. Good thing that MK9 finally got a compromise that he could only morph into the opponent instead of giving him the ability to become several characters via different commands. Worse, Kintaro had to be more painful than Goro. Kintaro could grab you mid-air and doing that corner punch glitch is really not available in all versions. Also, Shao Kahn really would give you a certain death OVER AND OVER again. Fortunately, Shaolin Monks gave us the chance to take revenge on them in the regular play mode by actually FINISHING those bastards off even if it's non-canon.
