Why I Still Believe Voltes V's Bergan Was A Promoted Hornless

Voltes V was somewhat ambiguous whether if General Bergan had horns (which would've been so FUNNY LOOKING that he was ashamed of them) or if he was born hornless. Some can assume that he lost his horns in a war. However, a better review of Voltes V from past episodes before he arrived and after he arrived can provide a clue. Blink and you might miss that Voltes V did have more than Prince Lagour (Dr. Kentaro Gou) as a significant hornless character. There were other Voltes V characters who were hornless too.

Now, it's time to look at two Boazanian Beast Knights (dubbed over as Beast Fighters) or as some prefer to call it Robeasts. However, a Robeast is a ROBOT BEAST and not every giant monster that was sent to fight was a robot beast. Here are two of the Beast Knights that were actually HORNLESS...

An earlier episode showed Gardo as a Beast Knight. It wasn't explained in-show how the Boazanians enlarged anything to become a Beast Knight. Granted, there were a few episodes where an Earth animal was changed into a Beast Knight like a wolf, a catfish, or an amoeba. I guess the same process was there. Gardo was shown to be a hornless Boazanian warrior turned Beast Fighter. Prince Heinel then granted Gardo the gift of horns. He's the first Boazanian slave to become a Beast Knight. He proved his worth by defeating another Beast Knight in the arena. Those were done four years before Golion would take it Up to Eleven with the more brutal beast fighters (Deathblack Beastmen) slaying each other at Emperor Daibazaal's arena.

After Bergan's first appearance, I really found it funny when Hiyoshi said, "Who are the animals when you have the horn." Okay, where's the horns on Bergan's head? Another Beast Knight known as Gilligan shows up. Gilligan is another Boazanian warrior turned into a giant and slew some generic Beast Knights to prove his worth. Later, Heinel showed some brutality by sentencing Gilligan to death - an act that would somehow foreshadow Prince Sincline's brutal acts towards his own subordinates. Granted, Sincline does invoke several tropes that Heinel has except he's a Corrupted Character Copy. Gilligan's last words included his admiration for General Dange (a former member of the nobility who broke his own horns) and that he was born a slave.

The concept of turning warriors into gigantic Beast Fighters was later reused in Golion. One episode had a woman's brother VOLUNTEERING to become a Galran Beast Fighter. Sadak was given the chance to redeem himself by becoming a Beast Fighter. Prince Samson from the Planet Heracles was also turned into a Beast Fighter. Golion had several human-sized monsters that were turned into gigantic Beast Fighters to combat Golion. Both Boazan and Galra had issues with despotic emperors who cared less about the working class of their empires. Both Boazan and Galra used their Beast Fighters to conquer other worlds too.

Apparently, being hornless in Boazania didn't always mean one was sent to be treated less than human. Sure, it meant that some of the hornless were working class. I think Boazania under Emperor Zambojil's rule would be nearly similar to the Galra Empire under Daizabaal. Both Zambojil and Daibazaal were cowards who didn't take responsibility for their mistakes. Also, both Zambojil and Daibazaal were the illegitimate children of previous emperors. In short, Zambojil cared more about the Survival of the Fittest or who could serve him than if one was horned or hornless. It seemed that any slave who could prove themselves were well-rewarded. Any horned Boazanian who didn't was demoted to slavery. It seems that those who get mistreated are those whom the empire deem to be "bottom of the bottom".

My own theory is that Bergan himself, like Gardo and Gilligan, was born without horns. Bergan saw the value of serving the emperor than defying the emperor. Bergan had no qualms about torturing a hornless slave named Bernard. It seems Bergan, though a slave, was a brilliant slave and was probably top of the warrior working class with Gardo and Gilligan. However, unlike the other two, Bergan was knowledgeable in science. Bergan was probably appointed Minister of Science after Lagour refused to help Zambojil build powerful weapons.
