With Buntis Faib Legacy's conclusion, I felt that reviewing Voltes V and Golion was at hand. I rewatched the finale arcs and they did have some things in common such as:
- Both of them involved a prince being arrested and removed from power by their respective emperors. Zambojil had his second nephew Heinel removed. Daibazaal had his son Sincline removed.
- Both involved the titular Super Robots finally attacking the heart of the empire.
- Both involved a final giant Beast Fighter duel. Voltes V faced off against the giant Beast Fighter Godor. Golion faced off against a Beast Fighter called Mecha Beastman Galra.
- Both had the base of operations turn into a spaceship for the finale.
The similarities are there but there are also differences. Golion was trying to do some original things. Meanwhile, I think Voltes V did better than Golion in these areas:
- The role of the giant main base was revealed to be a spaceship. I think it was better that the whole Solar Falcon traveled to Boazan earlier than Castle Gradam. Castle Gradam may have repelled Daibazaal's attack BUT I think it should've been sent to Galra earlier than just the finale.
- I think the battle between Voltes V and Godor was better done. I think the battle between Golion and Mecha Beast Fighter Galra was rather cut short. Seeing Voltes V battle Godor was more intense. Mecha Beast Fighter Galra's battle simply proved that Daibazaal wasn't fit to rule in contrast to Sincline.
- A missing element is that there should've been good Galrans on-screen. Have Galran citizens fight against the royal family's evil. All Golion showed was the Galran nobility's oppression of slaves. I think Galran working class joining the rebellion would've added what was needed.
- I think Honerva's last-minute revelation that she was Daibazaal's mother was so random. In Voltes V, the revelation that Heinel was Lagour's firstborn was more invested in. Episode 28 revealed that Lagour had a firstborn son and nothing was known. Later, Heinel mentions his father is Lagour. The Go brothers had to find out for themselves what the audience gave. If the writers could invest on Sincline's half-Altean heritage then why was Honerva's role as Daibazaal's mother inserted at the last minute? That's why I felt Zambojil was better written.
Overall, Golion is still better than Voltron. However, I think that Golion for all its budget lacked the charm that Voltes V had. Voltes V only had 40 episodes (which is rather RUSHED) but it did try to invest on fleshing things out more than Golion did in 52 episodes.
