Episodes 39-40
Golion wasn't exactly well-received but why did it get past Voltes V's 40 episodes? Even the lower-ranked Dairugger XV went past 40 episodes! It's safe to assume that Voltes V couldn't get past Combattler V's shadow. If one must check the year 1981 -- a lot of things have been going on for Toei. For instance, it was the year of Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan and trying to wrap-up that failed Kamen Rider Super-1. I'm amazed that Golion still got past 40 episodes despite its lack of popularity. Sure, it's Vindicated by History but not as much as other less-appreciated Super Sentai entries! I mean, the Super Robot Anime got unplugged by Toei because Megazords sold better!
This episode brings up the LONG ABSENT AMUE. What was Sincline doing to her anyway? We don't even see Amue forced to dance at some of Sincline's sick parties. Sincline uses her as a sex slave but that's even too brutal for Golion. This episode has Galra plan to use the Space Wolf comet to destroy Altea. Amue is forced to to watch. Fortunately, censorship and generous Plot Armor keeps Amue from getting preggers with Sincline.
Sincline's shown to be perfectly willing to let Fala die IF she can't have him. Golion is forced to go against the comet but fails. Golion gets stuck at the comet AND is driven away into space. Sincline's menacing laughter shows his sadism. Sincline's crush on Fala can be that inconsistent. Maybe, Sincline has had plans to (censored) Amue. However, Sincline is pretty fickle with anything like any villain.
This is one time where I feel Galra does something better than usual. Golion is in space. Alor plans to rescue Golion but fails. Sincline's wicked behavior towards Amue is THAT creepy. Instead of feasting -- I'm glad the villains decided to do something worthwhile. A larger-than-usual Mecha Beast Fighter claled Nu is sent. It's a four-legged monster with multiple tentacles. The people at Altea are helpless against the giant monster.
This is also the episode that was probably not known directly to WEP. Golion's origin story was that it was a savage god of destruction. The same Goddess that split Golion into five lions returns. Yes, that Goddess wasn't Honerva in disguise. Golion reaches the far reaches of space. Golion is told not to give up yet. The Lion Voltron episode has the Goddess supposedly welcoming them to Heaven. Here, none of that talk and the Goddess encourages the team to move forward. Golion gets an emergency boost as a Plot Armor.
Golion flies back to Altea to everyone's delight. Golion crushes down Mu with the newfound power. Sincline decides to take frustration out on Amue. Fortunately, Amue is still protected by Plot Armor. Sincline decides to finish off Amue like he does to any slave girl that displeases him. However, the Goddess decides to save Amue. Amue falls down a pit of skulls. A mysterious figure that looks like Takashi. In WEP, the footage was used for Sven. Here, it's actually Takashi's brother Ryou.
