Mortal Kombat Friendships: It's A Hit Or Miss

I'm not the biggest of Mortal Kombat 11. However, I still like the game to a certain extent -- despite feeling that Aftermath was plain HIGHWAY ROBBERY. The return of Friendships was something that made me say, "Shouldn't we have had those instead of Babalities in Mortal Kombat (2011)?" It's time to look at the hit or miss!

Mortal Kombat II up to Mortal Kombat Trilogy featured Friendships. Some of them were a hit. The others were pretty much a miss or just plain OOC. It's probably due to the time constraints as well as memory constraints. Some of them had a repeated friendship with a different variation. Who can remember the doll friendships in Mortal Kombat II by the palette swapped ninjas? They were followed up by Klassic Sub-Zero, Hanzo Scorpion, and Reptile doing a jack in the box -- their own versions! I found that rather dull and boring. Some Friendships didn't even match the character.

Mortal Kombat 3 and its updates had some questionable ones. Nightwolf doing a Raiden transformation was just one. It was probably a result of a plan to make Nightwolf as Raiden in disguise. However, that was probably retconned due to how ridiculous it was. Noob Saibot retconned to be Bi Han probably worked better. IMHO Sektor's strength testing pole was so OOC. Sektor could've used fireworks for his friendship. Liu Kang dancing was okay. After all, Bruce Lee was also a cha-cha champion and Liu Kang is partially based on the actor.

Mortal Kombat 11 somewhat fixed some friendships. Liu Kang's dance returned bragging the power of the eight-generation consoles. Raiden returned with Kidd Thunder dancing with him. Kano finally used his laser eye in a Friendship -- unlike the bubble gum break. Sindel also uses her scream in her Friendship. A lot of friendships were created to show off the hardware's capabilities at that time. Shao Kahn had the best IMHO. Shao Kahn got the Friendship that wasn't suitable for Sektor. Shao Kahn executes the test-your-strength hammer and BOY DOES IT WORK. The bell falls down showing Shao Kahn means business!

But as said, I wonder why Babalities returned in Mortal Kombat (2011) instead of Friendships. Come on, I thought it'd be fun to see Stryker do a 3D version of his street patrolling -- this time with NPCs and NOT the Kombatants. I would've wanted to see Liu Kang dance with better graphics back in the seventh-generation console days. Cyrax could've danced something else. It would've been fun to see Shang Tsung do his rainbow friendship. I would've wanted to see Hanzo Scorpion spear a teddy bear and hug it -- in the same game where Mileena offered him a teddy bear. It would've been to see Kuai Liang Sub-Zero drive an ice cream truck. Instead, Babalities returned probably because the people at NetherRealm wanted to brag, "Hey! We're evolving something!" The Babalities showed a new level of development but I still wanted Friendships instead. I wonder if Sektor's Babality result was meant to hint that he was supposed to have a fireworks Friendship.

Personally, Mortal Kombat (2011) in its possible remake COULD return Friendships in higher generation systems.
