Magneto And Mystique: From Not Working Together To Being Portrayed As Working Together

There will always be creative liberties with adaptations. Saban's X-Men: The Animated Series was an adaptation and alteration of the comics. A lot of stuff from the COMICS couldn't fit into a Saturday Morning Cartoon.  One of the many things that shocked me was that Magneto and Mystique didn't work together in the comics. In fact, Mystique actually took part in ARRESTING Magneto and was never part of the OG Brotherhood of Mutants incarnation. It was because Magneto and Mystique were often portrayed working together.

The X-Men arcade game featured Mystique as Magneto's cunning second-in-command. It also had Magneto successfully taking over a Sentinel factory. Juggernaut was portrayed as a mutant instead of a mystically-enhanced superhuman -- something I wish was done in X-Men: The Animated Series. Wendigo was still an odd choice, though -- since Sabertooth would've fit better! The game came out in 1992 -- months before X-Men: The Animated Series. The game was based on the failed pilot Pryde of the X-Men. Mystique was the second-to-last boss before one fought Magneto. That game was a quarter eater!

X-Men: The Animated Series presented the Brotherhood of Mutants as Magneto's group. However, it was also secretly reporting to Apocalypse -- the true main antagonist. X-Men '97 also verified that Magneto and Mystique had a working relationship. That kind of working relationshop was worked into the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- even to the point of making them romantic in the later movies!

The one time Magneto and Mystique worked together was in the Age of Apocalypse reality. Nightcrawler was Kurt Darkholme, and Sabretooth was hinted to be his old man. AoA Magneto and AoA Mystique were among the founders of the AoA X-Men. That kinda made it strange that AoA Magneto and AoA Rogue became a couple. AoA Rogue permanently absorbed AoA Polaris' magnetism (and AoA Polaris died). Talk about getting the powers of someone's DAUGHTER and getting lovey-dovey with the FATHER.

The idea worked itself into later comics. But as said, why I stopped reading comics years ago was because of how too many retcons hurt a story. Honestly, WTF was Disney thinking by suddenly retconning the parentage of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch? That storyline defined dysfunctionality and added layers to Magneto's character! I'm glad I'm not a comics purist either. There are times the adaptation can do something better too.
