Dragon Quest XI might be too long for my taste. It's probably because I enjoyed playing Dragon Quest Heroes entries more. I had fun switching between the hero/heroine. However, Dragon Quest 11 went for the silent protagonist -- presumably as an extension of the player. I usually skipped some things like the side quests and did them MUCH LATER. Yes, I did a lot of stuff only after post-game. It was depressing to see Veronica DIE in Act 2. However, trying to rewind time in Act 3 would also reveal a much bigger evil character -- CALASMOS!
Mordegon reminded me of Dhoulmagus in Dragon Quest VIII -- the very first Dragon Quest game I ever finished. The PS1 Dragon Warrior VII game is WAY TOO SLOW for my taste! Mordegon was someone who got possessed by the more evil Calasmos. It's also revealed in Act 3 that Mordegon was the result of the wizard Morcant, getting corrupted by the evil Calasmos. Act 2 simply didn't get rid of the menace. Instead, it was but a DUNDUN plot twist. However, unlike Dragon Quest VIII, the post-game has a different final boss called Calasmos. That would explain the mysterious "savior" of Gallopolis earlier on.
Act 3 had a ton of insanely powerful bosses. Some bosses fought in Act 2 become Malicious versions of themselves. Some of them are fun to fight. Others are simply SUPER ANNOYING if you don't have the right tools. I ended up going to Neoseeker for a proper guide since I'm NOT a super player. I'm just a casual video game player. Some of the Malicious versions are fun. However, others will catch you off guard, and it becomes even more annoying. Some of them end up completing the lore. It turns out that Jasper was manipulated all along. It was nice to see Hendrik and Jasper reconcile -- something that never happened in Act 2.
Playing the Tickington sidequest can be fun. However, I'm not a big fan of the 2D mode. It's probably because Dragon Quest VIII's animations spoiled me back in the 2000s. Eventually, the Altar of Remembrance has some SUPER FRUSTRATING BOSS FIGHTS. The final 2D boss fight with End of Time -- is even HARDER than Calasmos! Calasmos could be made easy IF you used the Super Sword of Light as an item. However, the same couldn't be said for End of Time. Spoilers: End of Time is actually a trial meant to test the heroes' strengths. It was to find out IF they had what it takes ot defeat Calasmos!
The three trials can be difficult and fun. The trial bosses can be super annoying but also fun. It was nice to fight these guys and get some wishes. The "companion wish" has wishing for a best friend or a wife. I picked marrying Jade -- despite me preferring younger women. Sure, Gemma could've been the best wife for the Luminary. However, it's probably better if the Luminary and Jade marry, and perhaps restore Dundrasil together someday. It would be funny if Cobblestone becomes the New Dundrasil -- something I wished was included. However, the marriage/sworn companion option was nothing
Another optional boss named Timewrym shows up. It's funny how Square Enix decided to do palette-swapping in this day and age. End of Time is a golden version of Calasmos (and they're siblings). However, Timewrym is a golden version of Mordegon's final form. It's not explained how Timewrym came to be -- except he's meant to be a challenge of sorts. There's not much reward in defeating Timewrym -- except BRAGGING RIGHTS! Timewrym would also give Jade a bonus costume -- for diehard Trophy completionists. As for me, I usually ignore trophies IF they require ridiculous requirements.
Overall, this was a fun experience. In fact, it's an IMPROVEMENT from what Dragon Quest VIII had to offer with battling the Lord of the Dragovians in different forms.
