Back in the 1990s, one of the most intriguing characters was Cable. However, I'd like to spare a thought for a character I thought was at first interesting but ended up as a BADLY WRITTEN TRAGEDY namely Tyler Dayspring. Tyler underwent several identities as Tolliver (a weapons dealer) and later took the alias of Genesis (since Apocalypse literally means revelation or the end of all things). These things were what I'd call a case of tragedy for tragedy's sake. Tyler was Cable's son, Cyclops' grandson, and a tragedy that sadly became the third wheel in the Cable vs. Stryfe conflict. It was a case of a series of badly written and badly unraveled mysteries.
Tyler was the son of Cable and Aliya Jenskot. I'd like to say that everything started with a very OOC moment for Cable. For a start, I thought Stryfe's having to hire a mutant named Frisco to brainwash Tyler was unnecessary. Come on, Stryfe is WHAT CABLE COULD'VE BEEN WITHOUT THE TECHNO-ORGANIC VIRUS. Stryfe would force a teenager whose powers are either still developing or underdeveloped (and I even find Tyler's powers to be bad writing, where he could only project memories of others or read their memories to be out of league, unless there's an explanation) to go against his father. What's the OOC moment? Cable SHOOTING his own son, Tyler, was very OOC. It was an OOC moment meant to create a tragic domino effect for years and years to come. Cable would choose negotiation, ask questions first, and shoot later AS A LAST RESORT. Dawnsilk suffered damage, and Aliya's sister Hope (not to be confused with Hope Summers) NEVER forgave Cable either.
My proposal is that Tyler should've DIED before Cable came back in time. My own solution to the tragedy is this. Tyler slowly breaks away from Stryfe's brainwashing while he's downloading Dawnsilk's data for his Uncle Stryfe. Cable tries to negotiate with Tyler -- knowing he's dealing with a DELINQUENT that Stryfe had created. Tyler's telepathy/telekinesis (which is still developing) bursts out. Stryfe had slowly discovered some hints of his past (which could reveal he's not a real person) ad decides to kill Tyler OUT OF SPITE. Aliya had died during the crossfire caused by Stryfe. What better way to put the tragedy than to kill Tyler as well? Cyclops finds his son Cable alive. However, Cable goes to the past having buried both Tyler and Aliya in the Askani Future.
Instead, Tyler's death was when he took the Genesis persona. I find it to be one of the worst moments in Wolverine's life. Wolverine was already dealt with a more-insane Tyler (as Genesis). Wolverine later goes berserk and KILLS TYLER OUT OF PASSION. I thought that end was anti-climactic. It was also too much of a stretch. I thought Tyler being killed by his "uncle" Stryfe in future would've been the more logical tragic choice. Kill Tyler, make him a significant one-note, that feeds the whole Cable vs. Stryfe conflict that happens later. Tyler should've NEVER been the third wheel!
The Tolliver arc in the comics has to be one of the most badly-concluded ones
Sure, a mysterious arms dealer was a good plot. However, the fact that Tolliver was actually TYLER begs the question. How can Tyler an INEXPERIENCED YOUNGSTER suddenly run a huge criminal empire like that? Sure, Tyler has the technology but remember the Riddle of Steel -- what is metamorphically stronger than the weapon than the hand that wields it? A good weapon is useless without a skilled hand! Tyler as Tolliver felt pretty off. Instead, I thought of a better way to deal with the Tolliver identity...
