Why I Think "Beast Morphers" Should've Been Contained In The RPM Universe Instead Of A Huge Throwback Fest

It's been five years and some months after Power Rangers Beast Morphers aired. If Nickelodeon's bad scheduling is one issue with its unnecessary summer break -- I'm also going to bring up the real potential killer. Yes, I'm talking about how Power Rangers is a franchise that's really stuck with the Mighty Morphin' hype. By now, a lot of fans would've grown up and the rose-tinted glasses aren't gonna work anymore.

I read through Dryed Mangoez and it was the blog that taught me to get out of my closet Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters shell, learn to like an unpopular Toku season, and appreciate Ressha Sentai ToQGer. It also wrote a scathing remark against Beast Morphers -- which should be the company's fault over the cast. This really hits the mark where Beast Morphers really went wrong:

Beast Morphers as a whole does not do that. When the endgame has to do more with pandering to the older, rose-colored glasses-wearing fans by referencing a season that is considered today to be one of the best or most “mature” as opposed to a story that is developed over the course of 40 episodes here, it’s just not going to hit the mark.

Maybe, I was too harsh with the whole Evox is Venjix reveal. There were some loose ends with Power Rangers RPM. There are times when Super Sentai endings can be left hanging and some villain fates become ambiguous. Last year's Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger made a revelation that it's in the same continuity as Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger. It was a 10-year gap between King-Ohger and Kyoryuger. RPM aired in 2009 AND Beast Morphers aired in 2019. Right now, the Evox is Venjix reveal can be as random as King-Ohger taking place in the same Universe as Kyoryuger. However, I feel the whole summer break delayed that revelation.

Even the first episode can already be problematic. The mere mention of Rita Repulsa up to Galvanax links Beast Morphers to nostalgia land. If only the people saw its source material Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters -- it feels like a sequel to RPM in many ways. The Messiah Virus is obviously a VIRUS like the Venjix Virus. The fact that Morph-X is taken from the Morphin' Grid already starts to rely on nostalgia. If the writers only realized that trying to keep most Power Rangers in that singular continuity may not be the best idea. With the Internet today -- these people should realize that trying to fit all Super Sentai series into one timeline isn't a good idea. Instead, they could've focused on RPM's continuity ALONE through and through.

It could take place 10 years after RPM and the world is being rebuilt. Everything should focus on RPM's continuity. Coral Harbor could've been created as a beacon of hope after the apocalyptic event that hit the world. Any good writer could still mention RPM without mentioning it too many times.  Have Mayor Daniels say, "We shouldn't forget mankind nearly went extinct years ago." However, Venjix was only partially contained. Venjix manages to evolve into Evox at some point. Evox would focus more on retaking control of his dimension than crossing other dimensions.

Instead, Grid Battleforce became a museum for Ranger History lessons. I believe Beast Morphers could've done better WITHOUT adapting the messy footage of Kyoryuger vs. Go-Busters. That TV special was so difficult to watch due to how OVERCROWDED it was. Fortunately, they didn't take footage from that ABOMINATION of a film called Super Hero Taisen. Grid Battleforce could've just been focused on keeping peace. That means no Ranger History artifacts whatsoever. Just keep the whole continuity focused on the CURRENT audience. After all, it's supposedly rated for TV-Y7-FV or PG-7.

It's a shame that Hasbro never thought of targeting the CURRENT AUDIENCE. They could've learned from Go-Busters by NOT making the whole show a throwback fest. Go-Busters was mostly focused on its own story -- except during the Ucchu Keiji Gavan episodes that felt way too random! Go-Busters may have that two-parter nostalgia but most of the episodes didn't throw back to past Super Sentai entries. After all that massive continuity error that gets a love -- Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger -- already did the job. Beast Morphers could've just been focused on RPM if it didn't want to take place in its own separate dimension. It could've also learned from some other Power Rangers entries that didn't focus on making too many throwbacks. Instead, Beast Morphers kept throwing back to almost every previous season instead of trying to keep things fresh.

I should've just avoided finishing Beast Morphers since I don't like Power Rangers. However, curiosity got the best of me to see how Hasbro would deal with things. It's because Hasbro has been part of my childhood such as G.I. Joe and The Transformers. Toei also had a history of providing animation for Hasbro. However, Beast Morphers may have been a victim of too much nostalgia in the hands of executives. If they wanted some nostalgia -- I think focusing on just RPM would've done the job instead!
