Noob Saibot And Rain Were Depowered For Mortal Kombat (2011)

It's no secret that I view Mortal Kombat (2011) as a Mortal Kombat Trilogy reboot with better A.I. and more balanced gameplay. Two non-boss characters who were overpowered in Mortal Kombat Trilogy got depowered namely Noob Saibot and Rain. So what really happened?

I remembered the 90s when I spammed both Noob and Rain to no end. Noob's Ghost Ball used not to only disable blocks but also all attacks. Rain's Water Ball didn't only control the opponent but it rendered damage. It was almost possible to win for a huge amount of time by spamming both characters! But in Mortal Kombat (2011) all that changed with depowering them down.

We could start with how Noob Saibot got nerfed. Yes, he's still for noobs considering that many of his moves are still safe moves. Shadow slide, shadow charge, shadow throw -- those give him plenty of long distance attacks because he uses his shadow and not his body in this moves. But there's one ability that got so nerfed -- it's his Ghost Ball. Back in MK Trilogy, it was one glorious move where the opponent's attacks are also rendered useless. Here, the Ghost Ball can only prevent blocking yet you can still get hurt by your opponent. The enhanced Ghost Ball is only more effective to human opponents.

Rain's nerfing was done with his Water Ball. Sure, he still deals heavy damage with a lot of his moves but the Water Ball can only cause damage when it's enhanced. This prevents the whole spamming of the Water Ball. Instead, you have to be strategic and flexible on how to use it effectively. I find using the Water Ball trick to take more time but it balances gameplay overall.

What caused this? I guess fans had complained how Rain and Noob were too overpowered back in the 90s. I guess this was also part of the balancing issue. This was done not just by limiting Shang Tsung's morphing ability when playing as him or not making bosses playable. Both characters ended up getting depowered as to avoid getting too spammy huh?
