I had my thoughts on the Conan franchise' two analogous performances -- the performance of Conan the Barbarian followed up by Conan the Destroyer and the follow-up of Conan the Adventurer with Conan and the Young Warriors. Both were intended to be sequels but were poorly received for some reason. Both of them also had a female antagonist (Queen Taramis and Sulinara) who both wished to conquer the world.
Let's start with Conan the Destroyer. The plot itself follows Conan the Barbarian where it left. Sadly, Conan is left with the incompetent Malak. How Malak survives from beginning to end is a mystery. The whole film leaves off from the intensity of the film, toning down everything to the point it's just WTF stupid. The film's plot is where Queen Taramis intends to sacrifice her own virgin niece Jehna to the dreaming god Dagoth. I felt the film lacked what made Conan as "Conan" in the first film. For me, it was lacking and deserved its Razzie Award nominations.
It looks like they never learned from their mistake. Conan the Adventurer was a 65 episode success in spite of whatever toning down it had to undergo (because the Conan literature isn't for children). A new spin-off called "Conan and the Young Warriors" featured Sulinara a half-human, half-serpent and the three chosen ones of the Star Stone. The whole series toned down Conan further and somehow, Sulinara wasn't even as threatening as Wrath-Amon in terms of recurring antagonist. At least Taramis from Conan the Destroyer (who I believe served as Mesmira's inspiration in the Conan cartoon) was a lot more threatening and cunning!
Overall, two really BAD sequels to otherwise great predecessors huh?
