I was rewatching some of the X-Men: The Animated Series by Haim Saban and realized one thing -- Nightcrawler's father Azazel was only introduced in 2003 as a possible parentage retcon. Until then, there's been a lot of speculation who his father is. The 1990s X-Men cartoon did bring some hints during "Nightcrawler", "Lotus and the Steel" and "Bloodlines" which actually tend to point to one man -- SABERTOOTH!
Why do I think that Sabertooth may have actually been Nightcrawler's real father? In Bloodlines, Mystique told Nightcrawler that the latter's father was a wealthy nobleman. Yet, "Lotus and the Steel" does present a hint that Nightcrawler could be Sabertooth's other son with Mystique. Wolverine remembers Nightcrawler and then he sees Sabertooth. There's even a resemblance between Nightcrawler AND Sabertooth more than Mystique's husband and Nightcrawler. This has me thinking about it that Mystique may have lied about Nightcrawler's paternity -- to hide the fact she cuckolded the count with Sabertooth thus resulting in a mutant baby. Mystique's tears at the ending of the said episode may hint that she was hiding from Nightcrawler that his real father is indeed Sabertooth!
This has me thinking of how ironic would it be if the normal human Graydon Creed actually had several mutants in his bloodline. We know that Mystique abandoned him as an inconvenience because he was born without mutant powers -- which shouldn't be startling because it's revealed that Sabertooth's father IS human. If he has a human paternal grandfather, maybe Mystique's parents too were human so why wouldn't a human child between two mutant human parents be a possibility? "Bloodlines" may have been scripted to how both Graydon and Nightcrawler may actually be full brothers instead of maternal half-brothers. That could have built more tension to Creed's irrational hatred of mutants even if he's got plenty of them in his bloodline. Sidenote, I do like the Cinematic only plotline where Wolverine and Sabertooth are half-brothers -- imagine him also having a MUTANT half-uncle topping on top of that or Wolverine having to beat his own half-nephew in more than one incident.
It made me think of the plot where Graydon was betrayed by his own organization or how Wolverine knew of his paternity. It still made me LMAO and ROLF just looking at how the projector played talking about Sabertooth. It also showed how the members of the Friends Of Humanity are actually obsessed with the purity of the normal human race, never mind that one day, they too may have mutant offspring or the fact that mutant humans are still humans too!
