Scorpion's Complicated Character Development In Both Timelines

Scorpion is one character who's probably had the most unusual character development. He starts out as an anti-villain then becomes an anti-hero. The way he was developed in two timelines (Midway and Netherrealm) does somehow show to why he's a popular character. Think of Johnny Blaze from Marvel Comics -- an anti-hero who's got a rivalry with someone who he previously made a deal with.

Midway timeline development

I remembered how he was introduced as someone who was hired by Quan Chi but was defeated by Bi Han (the previous Sub-Zero). The weight of his sins caused him to land into Hell -- though it was also Quan Chi's doing that he became the wraith known as Scorpion. He would enter the first tournament and kill Bi Han but would later have an on/off rivalry with the much more nobler Kuai Liang. He would later join Shinnok in the invasion forces. Though it was at that time that he would soon learn that Quan Chi and not Kuai Liang was the one responsible for the Shirai Ryu's extinction. So the rivalry goes from Kuai Liang to Quan Chi.

The 3D era games do have their ups and downs. He would go as far to chase Quan Chi everywhere in cold blood. He goes from anti-villain to neutral character. He would later be cast into the Soulnado where he would be made the new champion of the Elder Gods. I guess Ed Boon did that on purpose to actually show his favoritism for said character. But the entire double-cross was that the Elder Gods for some reason decided to revive his clan as undead warriors like himself -- rather than from the dead. I do suspect Shinnok secretly manipulated the events and not the Elder Gods themselves. His rivalry with Kuai Liang is resumed.

He was last seen dead (again) in Armageddon.

Netherrealm timeline development

Though I do have issues with the reboot (such as Mileena's new origin story isn't as good as the original) - I thought Scorpion himself had plenty to be desired. The events of MK Mythologies are still in the franchise's reincarnation together with his rivalry with Bi Han. He does have a conversation with Raiden who tells him to spare Bi Han. However, Quan Chi manipulates him to kill Bi Han who would later go from the previous Sub-Zero into Noob Saibot. His role in the tournament also has him kicking Kung Lao's ass in his first fight. The villainous portion has him as a misguided minion of Quan Chi. He does face Kuai Liang who defeats him. We see a more angry Scorpion who still follows Quan Chi around. He was last seen combating Raiden before the latter decided to leave the Netherrealm.

The MKX storyline does take place 25 years after the original reboot happened. Much has happened such as his redemption from Scorpion to Hanzo Hasashi. So he goes from anti-villain to anti-hero in a more interesting way. More importantly, he also takes part in raising Kenshi's son Takeda during that whole time. He would revive the Shirai Ryu into a more honorable clan under him. In fact, he goes as far as to renounce the name Scorpion. He would later make peace with his former rival Kuai Liang after he discovers Quan Chi is the true murderer. However, he still engages in unorthodox heroism such as raiding the Special Forces headquarters and cutting off Quan Chi's head. Yet, you can't deny that he's now on the side of good.

MK11 does also features the whole alliance between him and Kuai Liang. He also meets his past self who is still misguided. I kinda like the whole scene where the older Scorpion lays dying at the hands of the younger Scorpion. He has become a more noble character than he was back then. The younger Scorpion soon saw the Shirai Ryu restored and helps the good guys with the battle against Kronika.

That's pretty much character development there huh?
