Love him or hate him -- Haim Saban does have some good points and bad points. I may not like Power Rangers but I do still appreciate the heart he once had with Marvel. Toei once had it with Marvel (for a few shows only) then Saban also ended up owing Marvel for his success. No Marvel, no Toei means no Saban Entertainment success! Now, it's time to consider how Saban's X-Men cartoon nearly had a finale in the four-parter called "Good and Evil" and why I think it should have ended there.
The show did have the very finale-seque type of setting such as Jean Grey and Cyclops getting married and Apocalypse executing his final plan. So really, why did it all go for naught and succeeding episodes treated it like it never happened? It's almost like how Mighty Morphin' should've ended with Doomsday Part 1 and 2. Apocalypse was launching his master plan once and for all and was gathering his minions he manipulated such as Magneto and Mystique. While Apocalypse was shown to be Mystique's master -- Magneto was somewhat part of the whole scheme to start a mutant/human war that could've destroyed the future for them. Remember how Mystique doesn't really like working with Apocalypse but she has no choice in the cartoon? Remember how Apocalypse secretly ran both Magneto and Mystique to do his bidding directly and indirectly? They did eventually betray him here having been fed up with his manipulative actions.
The four-part itself had to be a very ambitious take for a watered-down cartoon. Not that I'm complaining -- for some reason I could take Marvel's toning down by Saban while I think Power Rangers' toning down of Super Sentai isn't my cup of tea. The X-Men cartoon's four-parter featured Cable's final aim to destroy Apocalypse -- something that was later done in the comics in the early 2000s and other plots such as The Twelve were inserted. Hmmm... now only if I knew that finalization of The Twelve plot was after the series ended. Hmmm comics do take a LONG time for them to end, do they?
I thought certain episodes after Beyond Good and Evil should've been made before it. These episodes involve Lotus and the Steel, Bloodlines, the Phalanx arc and Family Ties should've been made near the finale to lead to the finale. I just thought that the X-Men series' final ending was rather disappointing. I always thought that why deprive such a cool series of a finale it deserved? At least X-Men Evolution did have a finale even if I still consider it to be an inferior adaptation by Warner Bros. during the early 2000s. The final episode (which was a result of cheaper animation that Saban worked with later on) really just sucks. Seriously? At least Saban's version of Spiderman did have a definite finale in contrast to this one -- something that got capitalized over and over again until it didn't end with a high note!
