You need to really think about the opening scene. We may not need the dinner reenactment done in story mode but I think it should've happened. Then we can have the scene where the masked guards suddenly waste the food. Shang Tsung can say, "Now for a taste of thing to come." before Johnny Cage is brought in as the first combatant to fight. Just think of that for a moment. Johnny's first fight was really a taste of things to come. Then after the evening tournament, he would say that some of them will even have the chance to fight Goro. Then he could possibly try to challenge Sonya Blade in her chapter which Raiden calls as an obvious violation of the rules.
Another possible scene would be Kitana should've fought Liu Kang at The Courtyard. The lines such as, "You disappoint me! Not very wise!" after Kitana is defeated by Liu Kang. He could say, "Challenging Goro? Are you that eager to die?" to Liu Kang before the match with Goro -- although the said line was said to Johnny Cage in the movie. Then when he finally fights Liu Kang could have references like, "All those souls and yet you don't have one of your own." to be followed by "Save your pity for the weak." before the end of the first chapter.
Then a final possible reference to the movie version of Shang Tsung can be made is him saying, "Mortal Kombat continues! His majesty Shao Kahn is simply changing the place to Outworld!" before he talks about the conditions.
Too bad this never happened!
