I remembered writing about everything wrong with Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance as a junk game. Now, it's time to focus on Mortal Kombat Deception - a game that once won an award during its year but I doubt it that I'd play it all over again especially after Mortal Kombat (2011) or referred to as MK9 really managed to create almost everything I wanted in a Mortal Kombat game. I would really talk about the untapped potential of the game as there was truly an interesting concept going on.
The game starts to explore more of the lore of Outworld. Onaga is introduced as Shao Kahn's former employer who was poisoned some time ago. Onaga seeks to return to the world of the living by deceiving a gullible man, Shujinko, into picking up the Kamidogu. The lore of the Konquest Mode is interesting, actually, but the gameplay is just flat-out BORING. Exploring the different eras and time periods can be fun if it wasn't for the bland gameplay. Not to mention, unlocking Shujinko was not only a chore but you had to find ALL HIS MOVES again after he was unlocked. Talk about a really tedious task and the character isn't interesting to play as.
What would be interesting is the untapped potential. I, for one, thought Onaga was pretty cool and was expecting him to be the final boss of Mortal Kombat 11. Instead, we had Kronika who I, must admit, just becomes boring in the long run. Onaga's development is that he was so powerful that Shao Kahn did a subtle approach to get rid of him. Onaga later returns as a fully powerful being in Reptile's body. The threat is so great that the Elder Gods made Scorpion their champion. The threat is so great that Shujinko must absorb all that power to defeat him. Though, Shujinko, moveset-wise, is BORING. I felt Shujinko should've been given his own moves and maybe, I can respect the old man's development. I also felt that Ashrah's quest for redemption was so sideline. The Orderrealm characters might be viewed as boring so they never made it into the MKX comic book series unlike Havik. Havik who never had a playable role in the reboot - he's still regarded as an important footnote. I felt Havik had potential to appear in Mortal Kombat 11 as one of Kronika's henchmen.
There would also be some questionable development in the game. For one, why is Kabal now once again, on the side of evil after he was introduced as a reformed Black Dragon member? It's somewhat explained that Havik is manipulating Kabal. Though the latest Black Dragon recruits are anything but interesting - Kobra and Kira are just generic villains and don't get much focus either. I guess the two are even more boring than Mavado and Hsu Hao. At least both Mavado and Hsu Hao had the honor to be killed off by Jacqui and Scorpion. I guess the two are even blander than you think.
The Gamecube version had both Shao Kahn and Goro (two popular bosses) returning as playable characters. Both were actually cheap but were powered down nonetheless. It would be very interesting to see how Goro and Shao Kahn still showed that they weren't overshadowed. It seems that Onaga himself would still get overshadowed by Shao Kahn yet again. Shao Kahn's storyline that he overthrew his master, managed to make people look up to him, and even WIN ARMAGEDDON after everyone killed themselves. I guess Onaga's introduction just can't match up to Shao Kahn. The fact that Shao Kahn managed to overthrow Onaga (even by deceit) should cement the former's status as the best villain in the franchise.
What are your thoughts on this opinion of mine about the untapped potential?
