Here's a memory from the 1990s when I would be 11-12 years old. Granted, I really hated how RPN-9 gave a really bad broadcast of Dragon Ball Z in contrast to what GMA-7 did with the bad Tagalog dubs. Okay, I've been skipping the Tagalog dubs and I think the English dub is rather decent. RPN-9 had really bad scheduling of Dragon Ball Z so I never saw the Frieza Saga UNTIL GMA-7 aired much of it. However, school days prevented me from seeing more of the saga. It's a good thing Cartoon Network Philippines managed to show more of it.
There wasn't much of a choice back then. Internet was still DIAL-UP (and I really HATED that memory). All there was available was the cheesy licensed dubs by one Filipino company after the other. Who can remember watching the cheesy English dubs by Telesuccess Productions? There was also Creative Products Corporation that managed to get Toei Ltd.'s permission to create two "movies" based on four NON-CANON Dragon Ball Z movies. These movies were namely Dragon Ball Z The Greatest Rivals and Dragon Ball Z: The Movie. I saw the first movie on ABiaS-CBN and the second movie on RPN-9. Yup, those were the memories of those two films which I found out weren't canon to the Dragon Ball Z series.
The first edit movie revisted
DBZ The Greatest Rivals was a combination of Cooler's Revenge and Return of Cooler. That would explain why the movie went from Earth to Namek in one easy step. They were two movies that were based on Frieza's NON-CANON brother Cooler. Cooler is a what-if scenario if King Cold had an older son. The Creative Products Corporation dub had Frieza and Cooler on good terms. The name Cooler was referred to as Coola which is closer to the Japanese dub. The FUNimation dub though presented a sibling rivalry while the original script made him an aloof big brother. Just a note that Ryusei Nakao voiced both Frieza and Cooler.
Cooler was bent on ending Goku's life for tainting the Cold Family's name. The big concern was all about how Cooler was more after family pride than Frieza's defeat. I could remember how I commented that Cooler's transformation was actually cooler. I felt Cooler's default state felt like a hornless version of Frieza's second form. Mistaking Cooler for Frieza though is kinda funny since the two can be easily distinguished from each other.
The Return of Cooler portion though is where things got cooler. I felt Cooler's fourth transformation (which was a supplement to his real form) was wasted when Goku went Super Saiyan. Sure, Cooler in his fourth form was able to give Goku a hard time UNTIL the latter went Super Saiyan. The Metal Cooler part was more frightening. Cooler's metal clones kept reassembling. Cooler was controlling several metallic clones of himself from the Big Gete Star. It's too obvious that a significant time jump was there in between the first and second half of the edit films.
That wasn't the last edit film though....
Dragon Ball Z: The Movie was actually the next two Broly films so where's the first?
I guess I was shocked to learn that the Broly character was introduced in two films before Bio Broly. Yes, there was the first movie called Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan. Once again, the films aren't canon when you try to connect them to the series. Certain events would make you wonder how they can fit in such as the Android Saga (which should also be the case of the Cooler movies) and Broly's first appearance. The second and third movies were made into another edit simply called DBZ: The Movie.
The movie takes place during a time jump. Gohan is now in high school and has a brother named Goten. Trunks is also now a child. Krillin appears and I remembered my younger sister joked about Krillin wearing a wig. The movie presented Broly's return and I always wondered what the big deal with him was. It turns out that he actually was that Legendary Super Saiyan that could've spelled a direct end for Cell or Frieza. Vegeta even went OOC and cried during the first movie. I still think that Vegeta's OOC moment though is something I'd do if I were faced with Broly. Broly was later sent off to the sun by the combined efforts of Gohan, Goten, and Trunks. Hmmm, aren't we getting tired of sending villains to the sun like Cooler?
The third Broly film (which features only a clone and not the real deal) was a direct continuation of the second. Apparently, there's not much of a time jump in contrast to the two Cooler films. Broly was destroyed in the second film. However, Broly's DNA was used to create a destructive clone army. I'd hate to think what if Broly's DNA was used in Cell. Fortunately, Broly isn't canon or it'd be a bigger disaster. The Bio-Broly was kinda funny though. Seeing Mr. Satan (or Master Pogi) getting humiliated was just so much fun. A clone of Broly was created which could mean the end of the world. Fortunately, the Broly clone was destroyed for good. Ironic though that saltwater itself saved the day of all things...
