The Mortal Kombat 3D era is either hit or miss. Mostly, I don't even miss playing any of them. Maybe, I could say that Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance is the Super Mario Lost Levels of the Mortal Kombat franchise. Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance introduced new characters but only to be mostly lame. I used to joke about being part of the Red Dragon. However, I felt Kano was far cooler than these guys. I decided to try and pick up Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and figured out how TERRIBLE buth Mavado and Hsu Hao really are. Daegon from Mortal Kombat Armageddon was the founder of the Red Dragon. But as said, Mortal Kombat Armageddon is also a terrible game.
For all the badness the Red Dragon had - they were written as the rivals of the Black Dragon The Black Dragon was a schism. The Red Dragon, though thugs, believed in honor and stealth while the Black Dragon played rather dirty. I guess that's what made both Mavado and Hsu Hao BORING characters to use. Yet, the Red Dragon was still used as a plot device. I guess they were created to be bashed over and make people talk about how cooler the Black Dragon faction is. Mavado is a toned-down Kabal and Hsu Hao really ends up as a generic thug. Heck, Hsu Hao is still so hated by the Mortal Kombat community that he's got so many deaths.
The game Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks did feature the Red Dragon operatives as enemies. The Wastelands (where you'll end up fighting Goro) have the Black Dragon and Red Dragon mercenaries killing each other. It's interesting how rivalries will inevitably produce souls to replenish your characters. However, no mention of made of ANY Red Dragon clan members. I guess Midway never cared about the Red Dragon except as a plot device. A plot device to show how Kano is so much cooler. Kabal ends up even cooler when he returns in Mortal Kombat Deception having defeated Mavado.
The reboot storyline features the Red Dragon in the Mortal Kombat X comic. However, their roles were rather CUT SHORT. Mavado had a short role where he wanted to kidnap Jacquie and Cassie. However, both Cassie and Jacqui managed to DEFEAT HIM so easily. Hsu Hao appeared even in shorter lengths only to be KILLED BY SCORPION. I guess Ed Boon using his favorite character to kill his most-hated character was so in our faces. Scorpion is one popular anti-hero and Hsu Hao is well-hated. Later, Daegon was last seen meeting with Goro. It seems that Daegon was already planned to be written off at the moment Onaga was later reborn in Goro's body.
IMHO, I think the concept was cool. I think Mavado can still be revamped. Hsu Hao? I feel he's better off as a lackey or background character. I think Daegon should've been in Mortal Kombat 11 assisting Kronika. The Red Dragon still made cameos in other endings in Mortal Kombat X such as Kenshi's and Takeda's. The Red Dragon was responsible for the death of Takeda's mother. However, I feel like Netherrealm Studios does hate the Red Dragon to the point the Black Dragon get more cool villainy plots huh?
