My Own Psychological Analysis Of Gaston's Obsession With Marrying Belle

Okay, it's been five years since the 2017 remake of Beauty and the Beast took place. I felt it was lifeless and I don't think a prettier actress would've helped such a COMMERCIALIZED remake. Though, a rewatch of the 1991 Disney version made me think a lot of stuff. Belle is pretty but lacks sex appeal. I find the Bimbettes who obsess over Gaston to be hotter because they're all sexier than Belle. So, why does Gaston go after Belle instead? Though Gaston did make a severe miscalculation into thinking Belle will accept his proposal - a bit of analysis of the hunter in him as to why Belle is his preferred bride.

A look at Belle's character is this. She's more than just a pretty face. Though, two things may easily be more noticeable for Belle. Beast could only say Belle's that attractive since he was under a curse and no human ever stepped foot inside the castle. Gaston could see every girl in the village. There's the Bimbettes who are hot blondes. Why does Gaston call Belle the most beautiful girl in town? Beauty can be seen in two ways - outside and inside. Belle is beautiful inside-out which may make her more appealing to Gaston. The Bimbettes are hotter than Belle. However, the Bimbettes are shallow and probably have the worst personality. Belle is also well-read and has her intellect. Maybe, that's why Gaston wants to try his shot on her - to make a woman whom he knows is too smart for him, his. It seems Gaston only tells Lefou that she's the prettiest girl in town as a Freudian slip. Deep within, Gaston knows that Belle isn't going to be easy to catch.

Now, for the part where Gaston somehow gets fascinated by Belle's INTELLECT. So that means even if Belle may not be so pretty (such as in the 2017 version) - Gaston wants a woman that's hard to catch. He thinks getting her as his wife one way or another will give him satisfaction. Gaston choosing one of the Bimbettes for his bride would totally be too easy. Gaston is a hunter who loves danger. Lefou called thinking a "dangerous past time". It may imply Gaston actually wants an intelligent wife, not a beautiful wife, and that he only calls Belle the prettiest girl in the village as an excuse to get her. Though, one could also think that because Belle seems perfect - making her Gaston's ideal prey.

Gaston could've easily let go of Belle. His making three hotter ladies (the Bimbettes) cry on his failed wedding was something. Instead, Belle's humiliation of him was totally not the last straw. Instead, he views Belle as an elusive prize to be gotten. It's like hunter vs. hunted. He decides to set a trap with Maurice as the bait. Gaston plans to have Maurice thrown into the asylum unless Belle agrees to marry him. It's pretty much a game of hunter vs. hunted once again, right? The trap sprang when Belle returned. So, Gaston wants to get his prey (Belle) even if the hotter Bimbettes were always stalking him.

Belle uses the magic mirror to prove her father, Maurice, isn't crazy. What's the next reaction? Gaston could've probably just prudently said, "Well, you have feelings for that monster. You're all his! I'm out!" Instead, Gaston decides to fight Beast since he's a HUNTER. Gaston decides that he'd fight Beast to get Belle rather than get one of the Bimbettes. Getting any prettier girl who'd fall for him is easy. For Gaston, Belle is more ideal because she's hard to get. Having Beast as an obstacle only entices Gaston to be more reckless. After all, Gaston is a hunter. Besides, Gaston's act to literally backstab Beast is probably his, "I'm not going down without a fight!" As a hunter to the very end - Gaston's obsession with Belle is due to how difficult she is to get.
