Why I Feel Cream In Eto Ranger Deserves Much Praise

The upcoming Chinese New Year is the YEAR OF THE RABBIT, right? I remembered in 1998 when CARTOON NETWORK had a gag that Daffy Duck wants to make it the year of the duck. My little sister hated Cream  (known to her as Kelly due to the Tagalog dub). She even wrote a parody (as a child) that both Cream (as Kelly) and Bugs Bunny kept saying, "I HATE YOU!" to each other when it became the Year of the Duck. Well, it was still the Year of the Rabbit in real life.

For some reason, Cream was presented as a weak character. It seemed that she was damsel-in-distress to her official inter-species pairing with Bakumaru. Oh boy, I wonder which is funnier between Kermit and Piggy or Cream and Bakumaru. It seems that if Cream and Bakumaru ever breed - they'll have rat sons and rabbit daughters like how Kermit and Piggy had children in A Muppet Christmas Carol. Now, being Bakumaru's official girlfriend doesn't automatically grant her the main heroine status. Sometimes, the hero's girlfriend may not always show up.

However, let's consider Cream's involvement in the show. For what she lacked in prowess (though she can be deadly like hitting two mooks with a LOG) - she was mostkly known for her smarts and solving problems. I still can't forget the moment she ried to distract the rabbit with her magic. She's also been the problem solver for many episodes. This one is from Hayate Report about Cream - the blog that served for my inspiration for this very similar post:

Juuni Senshi Bakuretsu Eto Ranger is an anime of 39 episodes. For the first 22 episodes, Cream had an unquestionably heavy influence on the plot. She was picked 11 times out of 18 missions (61%) – second only to Bakuramu himself (100%…) – and while she had (seriously) zero combat abilities, she contributed to every mission she was on with her keen perceptions and wit, often assisted to drive forward the search for Jyarei Monsters. The pinnacle of her performance is definitely Episode 16, which is really loved by Bacreamaru fans. Even her love story with Bakumaru was essential for the plot, as it was ultimately his determination to save her that led Bakuramu to master his ultimate move. Cream was much more than a cute rabbit on the team; she was indispensible.

Perhaps the producers decided that they had shown us enough Cream (bad mistake if true!), things took a nosedive for her in the next 15 episodes or so. Cream only appeared in 5 of the 12 remaining missions (42%), of which she was only influential in two. She was first overshadowed by SoufflĂ© (who took over leadership from Bakumaru when he was not assigned on mission for the first time) and then by Tart. In the case of the latter, Tart was heavily involved in the plot when she found herself in a love triangle between herself, Gaoh and Chocolat, who was revealed to be Gaoh’s longtime love interest. Some commentators pointed out that Gaoh was essentially the main character of the show in Episodes 30-38, while Tart was the main heroine. While Bakumaru was still very important to the story in those episodes, Cream was demoted to a supporting role, most of the time doing no support at all.

However, the finale gave Cream her time to shine AGAIN

What really would move Cream again? Well, it's the very finale when Nyanma (actually Chocolat) was going all nuts. Nyanma has never been the true antagonist but the demonic Jyarei Goddess Baki. BWhy Baki never revealed any humanoid form is a mystery. Baki would later possess Dark Kirinda hoping to destroy the Eto rangers once and for all. It was also Baki who caused Chocolat's very innocent form to be corrupted as Nyanma. It was here Cream decided to finally try to appeal to Chocolat's former humanity. In fact, Nyanma would eventually join the others to destroy Baki once and for all.

What really amazed me was how Cream was at risk of getting KILLED. Yes, Cream would probably die if she fought Nyanma in direct combat. However, the appeal of compassion was greater tha any power Baki would give to Nyanma. It was also the pivotal point of Nyanma's redemption. Cream's compassion won the day when Nyanma (or rather Chocolat) ended up helping the Eto Rangers destroy the true villain of the series.
