Vega: The Name For Claw (American) And For Dictator (Japan)

The name of the Boxer in the Japanese is really MIKE BISON. It's an obvious pun for Mike Tyson. Now, it's time to discuss another name called Vega. Capcom America renamed Boxer from Bison to Balrog, Claw from Balrog to Vega, and Dictator from Vega to M. Bison. I Googled what Vega meant and it's a very common Spanish surname (which was probably why the renaming of Claw to Vega happened). However, another meaning for Vega is the brightest star of the constellation Lyra or landing eagle.

The Dictator who went from Vega to Bison

The design of the Dictator was based on Wakizashi from the Riki-Oh series. Wakizashi means EAGLE CAPE. Both of them wore a cape and had the same military theme going on. It might be very noticeable that Shadaloo had the symbol of eagle wings and a skull.

It would be noteworthy that the Dictator himself has a series of aerial attacks. Early on, his Psycho Crusher was a special move. Though the Psycho Crusher was later made a highly damaging super move in many other games. I personally prefer the Dictator firing fireballs instead. The Dictator also had some landing attacks like his Double Knee Press, his head stomp move, and his flying fist move. They all have him DESCENDING like an eagle.

The Marvel vs. Capcom series gave the Dictator a gameplay move he never did in the Street Fighter series. Doing a QCB+3P (or 2P) would make him FLY like Magneto did in Marvel Super Heroes. Street Fighter Alpha did show him having the ability to fly but it was never used as a move. The fact the Dictator flies and descends makes him a descending eagle.

Renaming Claw from Balrog to Vega

Claw's name was originally Balrog but it was changed to Vega. Vega is a Spanish surname. One could argue that Claw did have some soaring attacks and had a claw. However, the Balrog from The Lord of the Rings actually has the ability to shroud themselves in fire, darkness, and shadow. Claw is actually an ASSASSIN working for the Dictator. The Balrogs were stealthy monsters and it seems Claw was fond of those attacks. Claw is vain and cocky. Why Claw would call himself after a demon is something.

From what's said, Claw's name was given as Balrog because it sounded strong. After all, a balrog is a demon. Claw is indeed a demon who can ensnare women with his good looks and charisma. I guess the name balrog would also address that the character is DEVILISHLY handsome.
