Cartoon villains are defined by some form of stupidity -- even the leader! I wrote about G.I. Joe's toxic partnership between the COBRA Commander and Destro. Now, it's time to discuss Hasbro's other show The Transformers. Starscream became the Trope Namer for The Starscream. It's because Starscream was infamous for his directly challenging Megatron. If Cobra Commander had Destro then Megatron had Starscream. Destro never made his treachery secret and neither did Starscream. This makes me ask, "Why would Megatron ever tolerate Starscream for TWO SEASONS STRAIGHT?"
One needs to take a look at how Destro and Starscream operate. Basically, Megatron needs Starscream as much as Cobra Commander needs Destro. Starscream has high intelligence and is a weapons specialist -- like Destro. Starscream is also the Air Commander -- something Megatron also needs. Without Starscream -- Megatron probably wouldn't have the resources to cook up typical Saturday morning villain plans. Starscream was also frequently blamed upon Megatron should things go south. Cobra Commander had the habit of blaming Destro -- that's before Serpentor got created and Cobra Commander took the role of scapegoat.
Megatron probably goes with some pragmatic reasons combined with cartoon villain stupidity. Starscream did create the Combaticons. The Combaticons could combine into Bruticus. Sure, Megatron nearly lost leadership. However, Starscream proved his worth by stopping the nearly unstable combiner Bruticus. Starscream regained his ranks. It's pretty much like how Destro manages to regain the Cobra Commander's favor. However, that never stopped Destro and Starscream from trying to get rid of their bosses. It also seems that Megatron keeps Starscream around for this reason -- to keep his mind sharp or to warn others. However, I always felt that Megatron should've just murdered Starscream for those attempts.
In Transformers: The Movie -- I feel this was one satisfying scene. Maybe, it's the most satisfying scene ever. I feel like that if I were Megatron -- I'd totally wreck Starscream IN FRONT OF EVERYONE as a warning. Megatron was among the damaged and Starscream took advantage to get rid of the former. Megatron became Galvatron and the remains of the others became Cyclonus (and the somehow hardly used Armada), and Scourge with his Sweeps. Galvatron, still retaining some of Megatron's personality, has the last straw. Starscream was about to get coronated. Galvatron turned into a cannon and FIRED A CONCENTRATED SHOT. How badass can that get? I felt Starscream finally got what he deserved!
However, Starscream returned in Transformers Season 3 as a ghost. It's explained that there's something unusual with Starscream's Spark. Starscream would return as a ghost to cause trouble. Starscream possessed Scourge. Starscream sought to return and take over. However, Galvatron still having his old memories as Megatron, wanted to get rid of Starscream. However, without Starscream, Galvatron ended up taking out his anger on the rest.
