My MMPR Retrospective: Why I Haven't Bothered Rewatching It

Image
It's no doubt that this year is the 25th anniversary of Power Rangers. For me, not's not so exciting anymore considering that I no longer like Power Rangers and I enjoy Super Sentai more. On the other hand, I still acknowledge the contracts between Toei and Saban to have the show produced and how cultural differences play a part in the existence of Power Rangers. But I'd like to actually write something about one show that played a part in my childhood -- yet it no longer appeals to me as a good memory as an adult. No, I'm not going even to accuse MMPR of racism because of Trini and Zack -- they weren't negatively portrayed either! I would say that I started liking Power Rangers because well -- it was a child's show! I remembered how Mighty Morphin' aired side to side with X-Men in ABS-CBN (though there was also Batman: The Animated Series). Speaking of which, the 90s X-Men cartoon was also produced by the same company that produced Mighty Morphin' --...

Rainbow Islands

Image
Rainbow Islands was one game I remembered so fondly today -- it somehow still brings back memories even if the 90s did have that problem of too many sudden brownouts. So what's the whole game about? I didn't know there was an arcade version until I grew up. It was a cute game -- that was all I cared about.  Playing the game can be fun and frustrating. You have to make it up to the topmost part of the stage as fast as you can since the island will sink. Your character Bob will fire rainbows (yes rainbows) which he can use to defeat enemies and climb up to the top. Each enemy becomes a various item and one of them includes the diamonds. Tip: Always collect the diamonds because they are essential to getting the good ending! If you didn't then you get the bad ending which had you fight against the seventh boss -- which varied between the NES version and the arcade version. The PS2 Taito museum had the slightly different arcade version which was the original source amteira...

Adventures Of Lolo Series

Image
If you're a 90s kid (or 80s kid) then maybe you've played this game on the Adventures of Lolo game on the Nintendo Entertainment System. This was back then when I got stuck on a Family Computer until we got the first Playstation. This was a game by HAL and back then -- there was hardly any Internet and if you didn't get a game guide then tough luck -- you're going to NEED to think much harder in playing this video game. Also, there was no real saving -- just passwords! What was so hard about playing these games? There were many mechanics that you just needed to figure out yourself. For instance, learning when to shoot enemies off and not to shoot them off was just one -- since some enemies would eventually respawn to be used again. The others involve enemies that needed to be blocked, some are incredibly fast and others activate when all the Heart Frames (which you needed to collect to finish a level) creating some crazy results such as sleeping dragons and skulls....

My First Impressions On Spielban

Image
Ah yes -- it's time for another random watch (from me) from an entry of the now defunct Metal Hero series. I just saw the rather bloody Girls in Trouble movie of the Space Squad movies. I remembered I discovered how VR Troopers or what I love to call as VR TRIPPERS was based on Metalder and Spielban. So I decided to watch Spielban subbed by Metallic Fan Subs  in order to find out how Hiroshi Watari was in fact -- that much of a legend during the 80s. He started out as Sharivan in the Space Sheriff Trilogy and ended up as a totally different character in Sharivan. The villains too are more complex with this one. Dr. Bio is actually Spielban's father but he doesn't know it yet or that Hellvira is actually Helen -- his sister. Well, Girls in Trouble did have its own version of Hellvira but I'm yet to see the original Hellvira -- not the one that Toei decided to create a modernized version that worked well in the Girls in Trouble movie. I admit, I've been spoiled lo...

Power Rangers Girls That I Find Prettier Than Their Super Sentai Counterparts

Image
Beauty on the outside can be very subjective and I tend to use it in my list of dumb reasons to defend something. While I personally didn't highly of Ninninger -- I only want to joke around by saying that it's better than the really bad Ninja Steel because "Duh! Fuuka and Kasumi are much hotter than Sarah and Hayley!" instead of coming up with a good defense -- which I don't even have for it. So here are some Power Rangers counterparts I think look better than their Super Sentai counterparts -- but this is a rare case IMHO and two, this is just me having some shallow rants. Kimberly Hart It's already common knowledge that no matter how much I dislike Power Rangers -- I'll always have a soft spot for Kimberly and I'll always find her hotter than Mei. I do like Mei but she's more on the cute side while Kimberly is more on the hot side. I still feel bad about what Douglas Sloan did to her with t he stupid Dear John letter  and still continue to c...

Disney Villains That Scared Me As A Child

Image
It was back when Disney used to produce quality films -- they also produced quality villains too! Back then, it was a time to actually know the meaning of fear especially with these villains. I remembered watching Pinnochio which really had some scary scenes. Whether it's the Fox and the Cat or well Stromboli using a sharp sword -- there was also the menacing Coachman. So I wonder how could someone like him who appears intimidating still lure those stupid little boys into Pleasure Island? He really was huge and intimidating. Plus, it doesn't help that he seems to have escaped his comeuppance while misguided little boys turn into donkeys -- a scene that was scary enough for me. Though I think he'd probably make much better money if he knew there were also adults and females who can be as jackasses as stupid little boys.  Lady Tremaine is another classic villain. She's a very intimidating bitch who really commands and strikes fear. Sure, she's NOT as ugly a...
